How to get rid of toothache at night


Tooth pain or dentalgia is the most common dental problem. Untreated dental decay is the most frequent cause of toothache. It affects almost everyone at one or the other stage of life. This pain can begin gradually or suddenly. The pain can be mild enough lasting for a few minutes or can be intense enough to last for a few hours. If occurring at night time interferes with the sleep of the individual.


Toothache occurs because of injury or infection to the teeth or gums. In certain situations, pain from the sinus infection, ear or throat pain and injury to the temporomandibular joint can also be confused to toothache.

  • Gum infection (gingivitis)

Some of the remedies that could help improve the condition include
1. Saltwater rinse

Minor toothache because of food accumulated in the tooth can be relieved by rinsing with saltwater. Saltwater is a natural disinfectant that helps loosens food particles, and debris stuck between the teeth. Not just this saltwater can also reduce the inflammation associated with the infected tooth.

2. Cold compress

Wrap a piece of ice in the towel or a cloth bag and hold this bag over the affected tooth. When you apply a cold compress, it constricts the blood vessels in that area and lessens the pain.

3. Medication

This includes over the counter drugs like aspirin, paracetamol, Ketorolac, or ibuprofen. Currently, pain-relieving gels are available in the market. These analgesic gels, when placed on the affected tooth, were found to relieve the pain.

4. Sleeping position

In case you encounter pain of the tooth in the night, place pillows under the head, and make sure that your head is elevated above the body. When you sleep in this position, the blood flow to the brain decreases. This furthermore helps relieve your tooth pain to a certain extent.

5. Diet

Avoid eating sugary or acidic foods at night if you are already suffering from a toothache as these foods can exaggerate your tooth pain.

6. Mouthwash

Rinsing with mouthwash can temporarily disinfect and numb the tooth for a certain period.

7. Clove

Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural antiseptic (reduce pain and inflammation). To minimize the pain dab a small amount of clove oil on the cotton ball and apply it over the affected tooth.

People with tooth pain should seek advice from the dentist. The above-mentioned home remedies offer only temporary relief. Your dentist will better help you find out the cause of the condition and provide a permanent remedy for the toothache.
